This year, over 1.1 million people attended the event to see what’s new and what they could look forward to in terms of mobility vehicles, technologies and beyond. With days dedicated to both industry professionals and consumer audiences, there were many different perspectives to appeal to. DTS did that and more, with the numbers to prove it.

Highlights and High Praise

The Xperi booth proved to be a popular destination throughout the show. “At this year’s event, we welcomed more than 9,000 visitors to our booth, including many customers and licensees who experienced our demos firsthand,” said Akitaka Nishimura, senior vice president and general manager of Xperi Japan.

Among the more popular demonstrations was one featuring DTS:X in a Mercedes Benz. Attendees were able to witness firsthand premium IMAX Enhanced content with DTS:X immersive audio in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class vehicle through the Sony Pictures Entertainment RIDEVU app. RIDEVU is available in Japan the United States, Canada, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Another demo that booth visitors enjoyed was experiencing DTS audio upmixing in a simulated car environment. DTS’s upmixing technology upgrades stereo audio sources like radio, CDs and streaming to match the surround or spatial audio environment inside the vehicle, all while maintaining high sound quality.

Other audio and in-car entertainment technologies showcased at the Japan Mobility Show were divided by audiences. During the days dedicated to industry professionals, DTS AutoStage and HD Radio® were available to explore. Meanwhile, consumer visitors were treated to an immersive and engaging DTS Headphone:X experience designed specifically for rear seat entertainment.

Overall, the DTS technology demonstrations received wildly positive reviews from show attendees. Of the over 6,000 visitors who both experienced the demos and participated in surveys, 75.8% rated the experience “very good” and 23% rated it “good,” for a combined satisfaction rate of over 98%.

What are some examples of how poor audio can frustrate players and how that translates into risk for OEMs?

Modern games don’t really have poor audio anymore. Game audio design rivals blockbuster movies in terms of production quality — a tremendous amount of work goes into it. Playing a film with significant sound design on crummy speakers would be disingenuous to that effort. The same applies to games.

The frustration comes from competitive disadvantage. If you’re constantly dying, maybe someone’s better than you, or they have spatial audio and can hear you coming, react quicker and take you out first. That creates real frustration when other players have equipment that gives them a tangible edge.

For OEMs, being “just another pair of headphones” in the gaming space means missing out. Gamers who experience the difference in spatial audio won’t go back, and they’ll actively seek out products that deliver it.

Additionally, owners of certified AV receivers from manufacturers like Denon, Marantz, and JBL will also be able to enjoy the experience. 

With IMAX Enhanced, IMAX and DTS enable content that can be experienced in-home and beyond with the highest fidelity, ensuring that filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimized for an IMAX-quality presentation. DTS:X, provided by DTS, delivers the full dynamic range of theatrical content and allows sound to move freely around the listener to make them feel more immersed. Disney+ is the first major streaming service to elevate the at-home viewing experience with IMAX Enhanced, giving its subscribers new ways to re-experience the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond.

As a co-founder alongside SenseMedia, DTS had an outstanding presence at InCabin Phoenix ’23, where industry leaders and professionals came together to discuss the future of in-cabin experience.

Industry Experts Share their Insights

In addition to a keynote session from Adi Capata, InCabin Phoenix also featured panels and roundtables with industry stakeholders and thought leaders.

In the keynote session, Capata highlighted the importance of in-cabin sensing in creating a third space that promotes productivity, wellbeing, entertainment, and human-machine interface (HMI) solutions. To ensure the transformation of the in-cabin space, the future requires advanced sensors for both drivers and occupants, improved algorithms, and a curated user experience with safety implied.

DTS conducted an interview with Greg Plageman, a visionary writer and producer of science fiction series and primetime favorites including Person of Interest and The Peripheral on Amazon Prime, who shared his thoughts on the future of in-cabin and the customized experiences that shape drivers’ relationships with their car. The interview focused on the importance of collaboration and how the movie and auto industry can come together to reflect how Hollywood is translating the concept of the third space to the big screen.

One of the highlights of InCabin Phoenix was the roundtable discussions. These discussions brought together industry professionals and leaders to engage in meaningful conversations on a variety of topics. I heard about streaming a few years ago and always thought it was cool. One day while I was playing a game during a study break I decided to boot up a stream and give it a try. It worked out, I decided not to go to law school, and here we are!

What game(s) do you play?
I play a lot of single player story-type games. Games like Assassins Creed and The Last of Us are my bread and butter. I’m starting to also get into multiplayer collaborative games too – I love jumping into something with my friends and really having a good time on stream. Sometimes I throw in the occasional horror game to REALLY mix things up.

What’s your favorite movie? Favorite song/artist?
My favourite movie series is The Lord of the Rings. I’m obsessed with Tolkien’s world and absolutely love rewatching those films as often as I can. As for music, I really love Majid Jordan’s songs right now.

How does it feel to be part of the DTS Freshman Class of streamers, and what are you looking forward to most?
IT FEELS INCREDIBLE!!! DTS has brought together some of the most phenomenal creators on Twitch. I feel so lucky to be one of them and I look forward to all of the incredible collaborations we’re going to have in the near future.

When you’re not gaming, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not gaming I’m either working on my socials, painting, or visiting my family. I also LOVE trying new restaurants, so I do that as often as I get the chance.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and why?
I would love to be able to shapeshift. Imagine being able to turn into whatever you want whenever; that’d be absolutely amazing.

With the successful release of Kelly‘s Downfalls High musical a chart-topping record, new music with YUNGBLUD last month, and our hearts completely captivated by his and actor Megan Fox‘s whirlwind romance, we had plenty to talk about.

Following an exclusive performance, MGK and RADIO.COM’s Nicole Alvarez got into the weeds about her first impression of the rapper, singer, and actor — and when exactly MGK realized he was more than just a one-trick pony.

Kelly says his creativity initially stemmed from an unstable home life, which led him to emulate the characters he saw in movies and heard in his headphones. “Probably when I wanted to be a Jedi,” Kelly says about his realization that his path would be many.

You would assume, with the success of his latest album and mini-musical, there comes a time for him to focus in order to complete the many tasks he’s set forth for himself, whether that be acting, songwriting, or otherwise. Don’t assume.

“The cool thing about that, in regards to what the future holds,” he says, “is I haven’t done that yet. I haven’t focused all of my energy into one thing yet. So even if you think I’m good at multiple… I haven’t yet given the world a version of me where I only focus on directing or acting, or just music because it seems like I haven’t accessed that part of my patience yet… ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ was my first experience doing that.”

“Most people don’t even get to a fifth album,” Kelly says, thinking of the wide success of his latest release. “So the fact that that was what has catapulted me into whatever realm we’re in now is blowing my mind… and to know that I haven’t made my best work yet is giving me a lot of hope.”

What game(s) do you play?
I honestly love all kinds of games! If we’re talking about my Twitch streams, you’ll most likely see me playing Animal Crossing, Pokemon or cute, comfy indie games. Occasionally jRPGs like Final Fantasy, Tales, Persona, etc. as well. However, I do enjoy my off-stream games, too! I like to wind down with games like Dead by Daylight and Overwatch and more on my days off. That often surprises people!

What’s your favorite movie? Favorite song/artist?
My favorite movie would probably be Addams Family Values. It’s an older movie but I enjoy the mix of dark humor and core family values. Ultimately, as quirky and weird as they are, they’re a family that loves each other and sticks by each other and there’s magic in that. Also, Debbie is the best antagonist in movie history. As for music, I love Perfume which is a j-pop group consisting of three members. I’ve been a fan since 2006 and I’ve seen them live four times. Their live visuals are so incredible and unique. You’ll never see anything like it anywhere else. Check them out!

How does it feel to be part of the DTS Freshman Class of streamers, and what are you looking forward to most?
It feels incredible to be acknowledged and invited to be a part of the DTS Freshman Class! I’m really excited to get to know the other freshmen and work together to create really fun promotions and events. 

When you’re not gaming, what do you like to do for fun?
Honestly, I feel like I don’t have a lot of free time these days because I stream, work, and I’m a student. But, if I do have free time, I really enjoy spending it with my dog and reading. I’m a huge Agatha Christie fan and I love murder mystery novels. I also really love going to karaoke which is quite big here in Japan. But I obviously haven’t been able to do that too much this year in 2020 which makes me very sad.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and why?
As someone who lives abroad and hates airplanes, being able to teleport would be really convenient and save me a lot of money. But knowing me, I’d probably end up teleporting to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean or something…

MAJKL secured a 5th-8th-place finish out of 16 teams at their first tournament, the Counter Logic Gaming Blitz Open Cup. The team further cemented their presence in the Valorant community in September, when they took first place at the FTW Summer Showdown tournament. They claimed a $25,000 prize for that event, which is part of the Valorant Ignition Series.

Sony launched the Drive-In Experience earlier in August and sold out the entire run of catalog titles in 24 hours. For the longest time I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIV (7 years!). I also play a lot of other games such as Animal Crossing and Dead by Daylight which I’m obsessed with right now. I’m not shy of branching out! Any story games that tickle my fancy, I’m going to grab them!
 
What’s your favorite movie? Favorite song/artist?
My favourite movie, surprisingly, is Alice in Wonderland. The movie resonates with me as I have a bit of a wild imagination and I’m extremely creative! If I had to pick one song it would be from my favourite guitarist – Tom Misch, Disco Yes. It captures the kind of person I really am!

 
How does it feel to be part of the DTS Freshman Class of streamers, and what are you looking forward to most?
I’m beyond excited! Every content creators biggest fear is audio so this is a fantastic opportunity to be surrounded by some amazing people with similar creative minds! 

When you’re not gaming, what do you like to do for fun?
I like to get out and about! I live in one of the most niche cities in the UK so there’s always something happening (usually food related). I’m also part of a Black Queer community called Rainbow Noir which, similar to a forum, we operate on making our voices heard and guiding the Black LGBTQIA youths reminding them that their existence matter.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and why?
This one is an easy one! I’d stop time (without aging). I’m always doing something and staying busy so 24 hours is really not enough sometimes.

Lockdown confirmed what we knew already: in times of uncertainty, humans will seek out safety and escapism. Like many people, when the harsh realities of the pandemic became apparent, I spent hours studying the graphs of critical trends from the apocalyptic looking Covid-19 Dashboard, produced by the great people at Johns Hopkins University. Whilst doing so a quote from Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy sprung to mind: “We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty.” It’s at that point, in the safety of my cocoon, that I reached for the TV remote and waited for the soothing sound of the Netflix ident animation and the escapism it brings. Turn on, tune in, and cop out, in the modern era.

But great content can only go so far; the correct hardware support is needed. I’ve watched how the search for distraction and relief during lockdown led many people to upgrade their devices, looking for a richer entertainment experience. Thankfully, the choice for the consumer has never been larger with many high-end TVs and audio products promising to integrate harmoniously into the intelligent connected home. 

DTS Play-Fi, the Key to Smarter Entertainment at Home

Variety has made choosing hardware for one’s home trickier. In order to pick the right devices, owners have to visualize their smart home, to understand how it has evolved over time and how it can be transformed in the future with next-gen technologies. 
Science fiction has explored the idea of the smart home for decades. The fully automated, interactive home, that seemingly ran itself was imagined and reimagined by many. Although the concept of home automation has been around for a long time, actual smart homes have only existed for a relatively short period of time. In the early 2000’s the technology that made smart homes possible started to become affordable, making home automation a viable option for consumers. The primary devices and applications were aimed at security and greener living, alerting us to intruders and ensuring that the home was not expending unnecessary energy.  

With the free time gained from no longer having to stare out the window in search of interlopers or regularly adjusting the dial on the thermostat, we now have the opportunity to make our leisure activities more rewarding and worthwhile, perhaps even smarter. The wireless multiroom speaker was one of the earliest devices that addressed the need for smarter entertainment in the home. The best devices provided pristine audio, built in support for the most popular streaming services, and seamless playback on multiple-speakers (multi-room). Fast forward to today and the humble wireless speaker has morphed into the vocal chords of a plethora of seemingly sentient computer assistants. Now almost all wireless speakers integrate seamlessly into at least one of the three big voice assistants.

There remains however one drawback, interoperability! Each speaker manufacturer employs their own proprietary connectivity technology leaving you locked into their eco-system. If you want to connect two or more speakers together for multi-room playback, then you had better make sure those speakers are all from the same brand. Great for the manufacturer, not so great for the general consumer.
